Polyurethane Finishing

HOW TO ACHIEVE A SMOOTH, SEAMLESS FINISH

A smooth, seamless finish on polyurethane products can be achieved in just a few steps. We recommend PL Premium adhesive, which expands as it cures, so before beginning any finishing, allow the adhesive to fully cure for 24-48 hours. Cut off any excess adhesive with a utility knife. Make sure the fasteners, whether screws or brad nails are inset so the hole can be filled with a paintable putty. If the polyurethane products are installed indoors, drywall putty, like Polyfilla will work. Press putty into the hole and allow it to cure for the recommended drying time. Sand the filled area with 120 grit sandpaper. If any indent is still visible, fill with putty again to ensure the void is level with the surface. Some types of putty will shrink while curing. After the final sand with 80 grit sandpaper, remove all sanding dust the same way walls are prepared for paint. Prime the filled area with an interior/exterior latex primer. Using a paintable latex caulk, fill in bedding edges to eliminate any voids. Now the installed product is ready for paint.

Any paint colours can be used, but dark colours and glossy paint will accent any installation flaws. Eggshell, satin or matt finish will provide a superior installed product. Given the smooth finish of polyurethane, foam rollers or spray paint will get the best finishing results. Ornate or intricately detailed products finish well with a brush or spray-on paint. For textured polyurethane products, gel stain provides a superior faux wood finish. Oak wood grain and weathered cedar textures show especially well with gel stain. Great results are possible with faux finishes as well.
