How to Install an Interior Door

Installing an interior door(s) is a great way to update the look of your home and increase its value. While it may seem intimidating, with the right tools and instructions, anyone can successfully install an interior door. In this post, we’ll provide step-by-step instructions for you to install your own interior doors.

Before beginning the installation process, it’s important to gather your tools and materials. To install an interior door, you’ll need the following:

  1. Tape measure
  2. Level
  3. Hammer
  4. Screwdriver
  5. Wood shims
  6. Finishing nails
  7. Interior door kit (including the door, hinges, and door knob)
  8. Paint or stain (optional)

NOTE: If you’re installing a Prehung door, hinges come pre-installed, and Step 4 doesn’t apply.

Install an Interior Door Step 1: Measure the Doorway
The first step is to measure the doorway to ensure that the door will fit properly. Measure the width of the doorway at the top, middle, and bottom, and record the smallest measurement. Then, measure the height of the doorway from the floor to the top of the opening.

Install an Interior Door Step 2: Prepare the Door
Next, prepare the door for installation. Remove any packaging or protective coverings from the door and lay it flat on a stable surface. Install the hinges on the door according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Install an Interior Door Step 3: Install the Door Frame
Now it’s time to install the door frame. Begin by positioning the frame in the doorway and checking that it is level. Use shims to adjust the level if necessary. Secure the frame in place using finishing nails.

Install an Interior Door Step 4: Hang the Door
Hang the door on the hinges by lining up the hinge plates on the door with the corresponding plates on the frame. Once the hinges are lined up, screw them into place.

Install an Interior Door Step 5: Install the Door Knob or Lever
The next step is to install the door knob. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the knob, latch, and strike plate.

Install an Interior Door Step 6: Test the Door
Finally, test the door to ensure that it opens and closes smoothly and that it latches properly. Make any necessary adjustments to the hinges, shims, or door knob if needed.

Install an Interior Door Step 7: Finishing Touches
Fill any gaps or holes with wood putty and sand the surface smooth. Paint or stain the door as desired.

By following these simple steps, anyone can successfully install an interior door.
